On a recent trip to India, I was quickly reminded that one of the ways to enjoy a trip is to take care of yourself.
In addition to following health recommendations regarding vaccines, packing certain meds (just in case), and having copies of required documents—and all the other things you must ensure on your travel checklist—there are a few things that will help you to arrive well and stay well during your travels.
Whether you cover interstate miles or trans-oceanic journeys, there are some key factors to consider that I classify as pre-flight, in-flight, and upon arrival.
Pre-flight:
-I try to start preparing for a long flight at least 3-5 days in advance. For me, there’s a lot to think about, especially if I’m visiting new country. So I have to get organized days ahead of time. I’m a list-maker, so writing a travel list is very helpful for me.
-Pack my in-flight toiletry case: facial wipes, facial oils & mositurizers, deodorant, aromatherapy roll-ons, etc.
-To help me sleep on long flights, I read to help me decompress from airport anxiety. I usually pick up several fashion magazines and bring along 1-2 paperback books (I still prefer the feel and experience of turning paper pages).
-I download a few movies onto my iPad 1-2 days ahead of my flight.
-I pack my vitamins and essential supplements, specifically: probiotics, digestive enzymes, magnesium, vitamins C &D, and oil of oregano and worm wood (for anti-parasitic action)
-I also pack a comfy change of clothing, including socks
In-flight:
-important to stay hydrated: drink pure water often
-keep moving: walk up & down the aisles
-stretch often: every hour
-get best rest or sleep you can: adhere to time of your destination or the country you plan to visit
-skin care game: moisturize, face oil +/- face mask: every 2 hours
-avoid alcohol in flight: dehydrating
-eye care: to avoid dry eyes: use Boiron Optique every 2-3 hours
Upon Arrival: once at your destination:
-Eat real food
-Keep moving/stay active
-remember: R&R, but avoid boredom
-Proper shoes/foot care: waterproof? Hiking/long treks? Varied terrain?
-Foot care: bare feet?
-Get proper sleep
-Meet the locals/immerse yourself in culture to gain perspective & understanding
-eat your daily serving of vegetables
-pack a small, portable self-care kit with some basic essentials (hand sanitizer, wipes, tissue, band-aids, sunscreen, etc.)
-be aware of sentiments and protocols around photographing people, places, and things
-Breathe
-Take it all in
-Practice mindfulness: set intentions to solidify and create lasting memories
-Gratitude
I hope that these tips keep you safe, healthy, and full of radiant energy in your explorations of cultures beyond your borders.
