After the gut, the mouth, or the oral cavity has the second largest and diverse community of micro-organisms. The mouth is home to over 700 species of bacteria as well as a plethroa of fungi, viruses and other microbes. What makes the mouth such an interesting landlord? With its various niches, tissues, and textures-- the teeth and the soft tissues-- make this region a complex hime for its residents.
In addition to being the initiation point of digestion, where the breakdown of food begins, the oral microbiome is essential to maintaining not only oral health but also the health of the entire body's organ systems. Some of the positive benefits of an hosting these microbes includes, but is not limited to (Source: https://www.nature.com/articles/sj.bdj.2016.865):
1) offers resistance to harmful microbes;
2) supports immune function;
3) aids in metabolism;
4) anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions;
5) assists in healthy digestion; and
6) helps to regulate the heart and cardiovascular system.
When the balance of good and harmful bacteria is off, a state associated with disease occurs, called dysbiosis. "A dysbiotic microbiome is one in which the diversity and relative proportions of species or taxa within the microbiota is disturbed" (Source: https://www.nature.com/articles/sj.bdj.2016.865).
What are some of the most beneficial ways to support a healthy oral microbiome? Here are my top ten tips for a beautiful and FABulous smile:
1) Start with eating a whole foods, non-processed diet that includes fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains (if appropriate for your body type). You don't even have to eliminate animal products. Rather, just incorporate more plant-based nutrients into your diet.
2) Reduce sugar significantly. Sugar is known to promote the growth of harmful bacteria and contribute towards cavities and gum disease. Sugar may also inhibit good bacteria.
3) Avoid acidic drinks which could alter the balance of the microbiome.
5) Quit smoking.
6) Maintain good oral hygiene-- brush twice, floss, and see your dentist.
7) Avoid alcohol.
8) Move. Exercise is critical for a healthy blood circulation (that helps teeth and gums).
9) Manage stress effectively. Stress can lead to grinding which may erode the structure of teeth.
10) Avoid applying too much pressure while brushing, and avoid harsh chemicals in oral hygiene products.
For a healthy mouth and body-- put your money where your mouth is and take care to monitor what goes into and comes out from your mouth!
